John Westmark : One of the perks of photographing events for our local Gibbes museum is meeting the artists and witnessing them sharing their stories and gifts. John Westmark’s ‘Double Bind Series’ encompass’ the whole feminine spirit; bold, bright, movement, stillness, grace and strength. The pieces are large with up close surprises.
The Details : For all the art close talkers…you know who you are… you step into a piece of art and want to see the brush strokes, textures, materials and the intricate nuances. If an art close talker describes you, John Westmark is an artist to see. The Double Bind Series yellows are made form sewing patterns and the little red dots are clothing pins.
My Role : I started with the assignment to photograph the exhibition and get some grip and grins of the guests. That morphed into me also documenting people viewing the art which has become it’s own category. Observing and documenting how the art pulls in the viewer is like photographing a courting dance. A contact that I had worked with previously through Spoleto offered me the opportunity capture a Gibbes event or two. I am now a frequent flyer at Gibbes events.
