Documenting Artist at the Gibbes Museum

The line up of 2019 Visiting Artist that called Gibbes their studio home for a month were diversely talented in their respective mediums.

Gibbes description of the program: “The program features 6 – 8 contemporary artists annually, whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South. Invitations are extended to emerging and nationally recognized artists whose work aligns with the Museum’s Collection Profile; whose work is in the Collection; or who have been identified as a finalist or winner of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art.”

The four walls of the studio are the same, but each artist brings their medium and personality to the space. Generally, you see finished work on the walls which gives you an idea of the artist and their style. Seeing the works in progress close up as well as their creative tools is a treat. Some are pristine in organization and other have a more free flow approach.

Some artist have collaborative art and invite you to participate. Others are working on projects that will later be for sale in the Gibbes shop.

If you look at art and have questions about process, medium and inspiration; keep your eye on the artist schedule.
