I had the opportunity to audit a Tik Maynard clinic for the CATR horses and instructors. CATR stands for Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding and their mission is to ‘empower children and adults with disabilities to enjoy more active and fulfilling lives through therapeutic horsemanship’. Needless to say, it is a special place with big-hearted people. For me, it was a winter highlight as it is a outdoor space where socially distancing was easy to achieve and everyone’s safety came first. I was there to soak up the horse/human connection practices and exercises specifically for horses in therapy programs where they are asked to be steady and safe while also being engaged and non-reactive. He offered ground work as well as riding exercises and interactions. There was something to learn from each pair of horse and CATR staff. Walking away with a few images was the bonus.
